I didn't think I would be able to break my smoking habit. It seemed like I was always waiting until the pressure in my life was at a minimum to begin to stop and of course that just never seemed to happen. I used my smoking as an anxiety reliever and I just didn't know what to compensate it with. I was leery of gaining weight and it seemed like every time I stopped smoking or even attempted smoking control, I replaced my smoking with eating and as soon as I saw a weight increase over five pound I was once again smoking.
It wasn't easy but I started some smoking control by replacing additional activities and habits for times when I would usually smoke. When I decided that I had to quit the smoking habit I started with a list of pros and cons for my determination to smoke or to quit. In other words what I was getting out of smoking and then the cons to maintaining my smoking habit. Of course the pros far outweighed the cons. The health and financial costs of a smoking habit makes the decision to maintain one you cant really argue for in any sense except for the fact that as a smoker this is a habit that you cherish.
After I made my list I hung this list up on my shower mirror and also on my refrigerator door. I wanted each day to see my reasons for changing my behavior this aided quite since quitting smoking is a decision one has to make everyday. As you stop smoking you have to foresee there will be times when you will slip but in the times past that I backslid, I just accepted failure and started smoking full steam ahead. This time if I backslid and bought a pack of cigarettes or smoked one I begged from a friend I allowed myself forgiveness for not being perfect and started right back up.
After I saw the bathroom scales go up I made sure to workout more and not to rearrange eating with smoking. I also rewarded myself by pampering myself with something I usually would not do for myself. If I pay attention to careful smoking control my cigarette consumption always goes down. I will not say that I don't think about smoking occasionally and most probably always will but I always remind myself that what you save is both money and health. Your clothes don't stink of smoke your hair does not reek of smoke and you can better enjoy the food you eat. You can also put the money you would have used for punching cigarettes into a bank account and watch it add up.
